What
do college coaches look for as well as scouts? What’s the
difference?
Pre
– Showcase preparation ideas:
With the summer
showcase season coming up soon, here are a few thoughts to keep in
mind for you parents and players out there who are looking
for exposure.
First of all, you
only have one chance to make a first impression. Be respectful,
positive, upbeat and attentive. Show appreciation for the
opportunity by hustling. Most
of all stay aggressive and let it all hang out. It’s time to show
your stuff!
1.
Start running sprints and throwing long toss. If you want a
good 60 yd. dash time, get out and run 100 yd. sprints. Throw for
distance to increase your overall arm strength and carry on the
ball.
2.
Begin to think like an individual athlete, as if you
were in a track and field meet. There is a lot of waiting around
then it’s a short period of time for you to perform. It’s very
similar to ‘American Idol”.
3.
Depending on your position, build stamina and agility
skills through repetition. Take ground balls and throw maximum
effort for 8-10 fungoes. Take fly balls and cut off balls
in the outfield then make the long throws to 3rd and
home. Catchers should throw to bases for power – quickness comes
after power when we evaluate. Pop times are secondary to overall arm
strength. Take your time and get everything you have behind each
throw.
4.
Pitchers need to develop a ‘bullpen routine’ that
allows them to throw strikes with top velocity. Many events have you
throw 10-15 pitches to an unknown catcher without a hitter. Stay
focused on your
5. Hitters need to
realize that hitting the ball on the barrel with consistency is more
impressive than one long home run. Power is recognized by velocity
off the bat. See the ball and hit line drives to all fields. That is
always the sign of a good hitter.
6.
You never
know who is watching. Body language and actions in between
performances are studied with as much scrutiny as the baseball
skills. If a coach likes you he will keep an eye on you throughout
your daily activities. You represent yourself, your school and your
family - carry yourself accordingly.
