Ask Your Question Here:

Question: How can a junior in high school get noticed by college coaches without much playing time when there are eighteen seniors on varsity and most of them have been on varsity since freshman year and start at every position?

Answer: Juniors get noticed by college coaches during the summer between their junior and senior years at various showcases and camps around the country. You are still ahead of the game with the summer coming up. Look into some regional showcases like Perfect Game and local college camps. Showcases and camps are the primary recruiting areas for colleges. If you want to make a good first impression, find a local Frozen Ropes facility and ask about our 'college bound'  training programs. Scouts and college coaches understand that the most talented don't always get the most playing time at the high school level. Stay positive and keep training to be the best you can be.

Question: What is the average speed of a High School Senior, right-handed and left-handed?

Answer: Good simple question without a simple answer. An educated guess would be 80-81 righties and 78-80 lefties. There are so many high school pitchers with varying abilities, sizes and strengths. The most important things are the ability to throw strikes and compete. I've seen seniors from all different types of programs ranging from 78 - 97mph. I'm sure there are some pitching in the 75mph range and getting outs. Many college righties pitch in the low 80's. Again, the focus should be on locating pitches and attacking the hitter with aggressive strikes low in the zone. The radar gun does not define the pitcher. Stay focused on hitting the mitt.
Thanks for the question - Matt
